I remember thinking that choosing a major would be one of the most difficult decisions of my life.  Looking at all of my options, I considered myself fortunate that I knew the general area that I wanted to pursue: communications. The thing about communications is there are so many paths you could take after pursuing a degree in communications. What I have now come to realize is that once you choose a major, you have to decide where that major will take you and how you’re going to use it.

I truly decided I wanted to go into communications about halfway through my senior year of high school. I was still looking at colleges and was interested in playing collegiate golf. This limited my options, and when I got down to my last two schools, I discovered that one had a strong communications program. The program offers three different areas of emphasis. After little thought, I easily came to the conclusion that Public Relations and Advertising was where I wanted to head, and I have never once looked back.

About halfway through my degree, I realized how many options I now had to choose from in the communications field. The possibilities seem endless as the industry changes constantly and new forms of communication are relevant while others may be fading in some ways. Being a part of a communications department that lets you choose an area of emphasis while still being extensively educated in other areas of importance allows you to never stop learning, and to push any personal limits. It also teaches you the importance of knowing your weaknesses and acknowledging that those aren’t the best avenues to pursue for a career.

I have always been one for consistency, but complacency is not a place that I find myself often. I love learning new things, exploring innovative ideas, and pushing myself to become a more well-rounded individual. This is just one of many reasons that I have found communications to be a passion of mine. Communication at its core functions in many ways, however it is constantly growing and changing. Once I realized I would have to find a job that suits one area of the industry, I started perusing internship opportunities.

The internship that I found within Amplified Digital offered something that most do not: the opportunity to work with each team individually and learn a little bit about every aspect of digital marketing. As someone that was unsure of what aspect of communications I wanted to go into, this gave me the ability to explore each of them and decide where I feel I’m best suited and what I like the most. This suited my eagerness to learn new things in several different areas and enhanced the strong education that the Spring Hill College communications department has instilled in me thus far. While I haven’t graduated yet, I have a good idea of what type of work I see myself doing and have learned far more than I could ever quantify or explain. If you want to read about all that I’ve learned, tune back in in a couple weeks when my second summer of internship (unfortunately) draws to a close.
