The Covid-19 Pandemic had a huge impact on our app usage in 2020. More than ever we looked to our phones to communicate with friends, family, and coworkers, to get lost in the endless scrolling only TikTok and Instagram could provide, and to stream more episodes of Schitt’s Creek than we care to admit. Here are the top 5 apps downloaded in the U.S. in 2020:

Top Downloaded Apps of 2020

TikTok

It’s no surprise that the uber popular video sharing app ended up being the top downloaded app of 2020. As the world began to shut down in April, the app gained even more of a following, surpassing 2 billion downloads worldwide. TikTok’s intelligent algorithm, mixed with everyone’s favorite form of media — video, made this app the one to beat.

Zoom

Ranked second, the video conferencing app’s downloads surged in 2020 as the world locked down and more and more people began working from home. The app reported just over 2 million daily participants in March, to a staggering 300 million just one month later in April. It was the most efficient way to stay in touch with co-workers and loved ones. From virtual happy hours, to weekly check-ins with Grandma and Grandpa, Zoom was the app to use.

Instagram

Instagram is no stranger to the top of the charts. In an effort to rival fan-favorite TikTok, the app debuted new features in 2020 including Reels, in the format of quick, shareable videos. Instagram continues to be an amazing platform for businesses large and small to advertise on. From leggings to a new coffee shop in town, the app makes it easier than ever to generate new leads and convert potential customers.

Messenger

Messaging apps were popular in 2020, so there’s no surprise that Facebook’s Messenger app ranked fourth in the United States. WhatsApp, another member of the Facebook family, performed better globally, coming in second in the world’s most downloaded apps with 600 million downloads. However, Messenger ranked higher in the U.S. with 2 million downloads monthly last year.

Facebook

No list would be complete without Facebook. The app might have come in fifth place, but don’t forget they own Instagram and Messenger, too. Whether you love it or hate it, Facebook continues to be one of the best ways to stay in touch with friends and family. It’s also one of the top apps to advertise on, similarly to Instagram.

The remaining apps rounding out the top 10 include:

  • Cash App – 52M
  • Snapchat – 51M
  • Disney+ – 45M
  • WhatsApp – 44.8M
  • Netflix – 44.7M
